You should probably design some towns or important locations and keep the procedural generation for the wilderness, villages and small random locations.
Can't you design a location and let the procedural generation chose where to put it on the map ?

I remember early announces about the level editor an so forth... I think the idea about a less grained procedural generation was already there for some times, even if not expressed as is.

Creating a fully procedural game engine is the Graal of game design, and most games that tried either dropped full randomness for some aspect, or were boring on the long run. The rare exception I know is Minecraft. However it took time to this great game to reach maturity (the first public alpha release is five years old, already! 8-x ).

Dropping fully random generation is probably painful, but it is an humble and courageous decision. Even if those zones you are cooking us will be the same from game to game, there is still room to keep various random aspects (I read here and there: "wilderness", "roads from one zone to another", maybe also zombie and loot placement). And plus, approaching a zone one way does not mean, it will be possible to approache the same zone a second time the same way.

It is all about the grain you will handle the randomness. If having bigger grains in the sandbox allows you to create greater content, this is most welcome. :ymhug:

I am still with you guys. ;)

sorry but i'm french, learn it or use google trad :ymsick: :ymsick:

This is why we want to make some hand crafted maps, we want to provide a better gameplay, some interesting quests and activities to do and push things in terms of level design and graphics. Dangerous Rays engine have a lot of powerful features but they are not used at their best because of the procedural generation.

A bit late but let me share my opinion:
Excellent idea!
I fully agree with that the important locations, main roads, etc should be placed by hand and static. Randomness and procedural generation can still be used for transition zones, wilderness, lakes/hills.
I really hope you can find the right balance betwene the two.

I bought this for the random generation but to be honest a lot of titles I have purchased in early access had random gen and 3yrs later they had to switch do to it being complicated. Sounds like the dev caught this early luckily.

non?
