Screenshots naming convention

Post by ToKamaK » Mon Jul 21, 2014 9:08 pm

Hi all,

I wanted to work on a screenshot set then I was surprised by some kind of mess. I saw that the naming convention was:

Code: Select all

(d)d-(m)m-yyyy-(h)h-(m)m-(s)s.jpg
e.g. for instance, a screenshot taken 4th july 2014 at 12:00:00 is named 4-7-2014-12-0-0.jpg.

If I keep screenshots over several months and keep then sorted alphabetically, most of them are properly sorted but sometimes, I have surprises: :-?

Code: Select all

2-7-2014-12-0-0.jpg - july
21-4-2014-12-0-0.jpg - april
21-6-2014-12-0-0.jpg - june
21-7-2014-12-0-0.jpg - july
23-7-2013-12-0-0.jpg - 2013!!
That is not a real situation but an example of way things can go bad. How could I got screenshots from last year ? :))

I would like to know if it would be possible to change the convention to something like:

Code: Select all

yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss.jpg
e.g. for instance the previous date would give a screenshot named: 2014-07-04-12-00-00.jpg. This way, screenshots will be automatically sorted alphabetically and chronologically. :-B

I know, I could just right click then sort by date, then right click and choose decreasing order but ...
... I'm lazy... :ymblushing:

Anyway, this is a little detail that is not quite critical. Maybe someone has even cooler tricks with naming conventions... :)

Kind Regards,
Monsieur Tatillion, aka ToKamaK. ~o)

Hi OldSnake,

I am glad to read that. :)
However, I can't take any credit on that method, this is ancestral sysadmin kung fu. (%)
It is a quick and dirty way of versionning config files when you don't/can't use a VCS.

Anyone who has even cooler tips is welcome. :ymhug:

Best Regards,
ToKamaK.

Hi OldSnake,

I tried to take some screenshots (primarily to check if the issue with wide resolution has been fixed).
I see you applied the new convention, which is fine. :)
I ended up with the file 2014-8-2-10-38-48.jpg.

However there is still one thing to do for the tip to work properly. :(
The leading zeros should not be skipped, otherwise when I will take screenshots the 10th August, there will still be some troubles:
  • Not OK (no leading zeros):

    Code: Select all

    2014-8-10-10-38-48.jpg
    2014-8-2-10-38-48.jpg
    2014-8-2-3-3-3.jpg
    ...
  • OK (leading zeros everywhere):

    Code: Select all

    2014-08-02-10-38-48.jpg
    2014-08-02-03-03-03.jpg
    2014-08-10-10-38-48.jpg
    ...
This remains better than the previous convention. We are on the right way. :)

Keep up the great work gentlemen,
ToKamaK.
